AEO
Also known as: Answer Engine Optimization
- AEO is the predecessor discipline to GEO — focused on featured snippets, People Also Ask, and voice answers
- Optimized content answers one specific question per page with 40-60 word direct answers
- Schema.org FAQPage and HowTo markup dramatically improve AEO eligibility
- AEO success metric: featured snippet ownership rate and answer-engine citation rate
What is Answer Engine Optimization?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content to be selected as the direct answer in AI-powered search engines, voice assistants, and answer platforms. AEO focuses on being the answer — not just ranking for the query.
While traditional SEO aims to put your blue link at the top of search results, AEO aims to make your content the actual answer displayed in features like Google's AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, and voice search responses.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO
- SEO — Rank your pages in traditional blue-link search results
- AEO — Be selected as the direct answer in search features and AI responses
- GEO — Get cited in AI-generated responses from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and similar engines
The three are complementary. A page that ranks well in SEO often has a foundation for AEO. A page that's cited in AEO features often has a foundation for GEO. Modern content strategies should consider all three.
How to optimize for AEO
- Structure content with clear question-and-answer patterns
- Use schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Article) to help AI parse your content
- Lead with direct, factual answers in the first paragraph
- Target question-format keywords ("how to", "what is", "why does")
- Build topical authority with comprehensive content coverage
- Maintain accurate, consistent information across authoritative sources
Frequently asked questions
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes for ranked links on a SERP. AEO optimizes for being extracted as THE answer in position zero, voice responses, and AI assistants. AEO pages typically have shorter paragraphs (40-60 words) and lead with the direct answer.
Does AEO still matter in 2026?
Yes — AEO is a subset of GEO. The same content patterns that win featured snippets also win AI Overview citations. AEO remains the foundation for any GEO strategy.
