E-E-A-T

What is E-E-A-T?

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness — a framework used by Google's human search quality raters to evaluate content quality. Originally E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness), Google added "Experience" in December 2022 to recognize the value of first-hand, lived experience in content creation.

While E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking factor, it represents the qualities Google's algorithms aim to surface. For AI engines, E-E-A-T principles are increasingly applied to determine which sources to cite and recommend in AI-generated responses.

The Four Pillars of E-E-A-T

Experience

Does the content creator have first-hand, lived experience with the topic?

  • Product reviews written by someone who actually used the product
  • Travel guides written by someone who visited the destination
  • How-to content created by someone who has done the task
  • Case studies documenting real implementations and outcomes

For GEO: AI engines increasingly value content that demonstrates genuine experience. Include specific details, personal anecdotes, and practical insights that only come from direct experience.

Expertise

Does the content creator have the necessary knowledge and skill for the topic?

  • Formal expertise: Professional credentials, degrees, certifications
  • Informal expertise: Demonstrated knowledge through detailed, accurate content
  • YMYL topics (Your Money or Your Life): Require formal expertise — medical, financial, legal advice
  • Non-YMYL topics: Demonstrated knowledge may be sufficient

For GEO: Include author bios with credentials, cite authoritative sources, and demonstrate depth of knowledge through comprehensive content. AI engines assess expertise signals in making citation decisions.

Authoritativeness

Is the content creator or website recognized as an authority on the topic?

  • External validation: Citations from other authoritative sources
  • Industry recognition: Awards, speaking engagements, media coverage
  • Backlink profile: Links from respected sites in the same topic area
  • Wikipedia presence: Being cited or having a Wikipedia article
  • Community standing: Reputation in industry forums and social platforms

For GEO: AI engines use external signals to validate authority. Build citations, earn media coverage, and establish your brand as the go-to source for your topic. Authority compounds over time through consistent, quality output.

Trustworthiness

Is the content accurate, honest, safe, and reliable?

  • Accuracy: Factual correctness with verifiable sources
  • Transparency: Clear authorship, contact information, and editorial policies
  • Security: HTTPS, privacy policies, secure transactions
  • Citations: Proper attribution and linking to sources
  • Updates: Content maintained and corrected when needed
  • No deceptive practices: No clickbait, misleading claims, or hidden agendas

For GEO: Trustworthiness is the most critical pillar. AI engines are designed to be helpful and accurate — they will not cite sources they perceive as untrustworthy. Ensure your content is factually correct, well-sourced, and transparent about authorship.

E-E-A-T and AI Visibility

AI engines apply E-E-A-T principles when selecting sources for citation:

  • ChatGPT: Prefers sources from established, well-known brands with clear expertise signals
  • Google AI Overviews: Directly uses E-E-A-T as a core quality framework for source selection
  • Perplexity: Citations go to sources perceived as authoritative and trustworthy for the specific query
  • Claude: Prioritizes trustworthy, well-sourced content, especially for professional queries

Implementing E-E-A-T for GEO

  1. Show who you are: Author pages with detailed bios, credentials, and experience
  2. Show your work: Cite sources, include data, document methodology
  3. Show you're current: Regular updates with visible modification dates
  4. Show real experience: Include original photos, case studies, first-hand accounts
  5. Build external validation: Earn mentions, citations, and links from respected sources
  6. Be transparent: Clear about who owns the site, how content is created, and editorial standards
  7. Be accurate: Fact-check rigorously — AI-engine cited inaccuracies compound across the web
