Claude vs Gemini vs ChatGPT: Which AI Engine Matters Most for Brand Visibility in 2026

The short answer

ChatGPT drives the most brand visibility and referral traffic by a wide margin. Google Gemini and AI Overviews process the largest query volume but are harder for individual brands to break into because their citation logic is heavily ranking-correlated. Claude is the smallest of the three in terms of users but is growing fast, and its preference for authoritative, well-sourced content makes it strategically important for certain industries, including legal, finance, and healthcare. Perplexity’s citation-first format makes it the most transparent platform for tracking what drives visibility.

Optimizing for only one engine is a mistake. Each has a different search backend. Each has different citation preferences. Each defines source quality differently. Only 11 percent of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for the same query, per Ahrefs research from December 2025. These are separate surfaces requiring parallel strategies.

This guide compares the six major AI search platforms across the dimensions that determine whether your brand gets cited: user reach, search backend architecture, citation patterns, referral traffic and conversion rates, content freshness sensitivity, and engine-specific optimization levers.

By the numbers: user base and query volume

The scale differences between platforms are large enough to shape strategy on their own.

ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users as of early 2026, per OpenAI, which extrapolates to roughly 2.8 billion monthly active users. The platform processes approximately 2.5 billion queries per day, according to OtterlyAI estimates from January 2026. ChatGPT grew 8x from October 2023, when it had 100 million weekly users, to April 2025, when it crossed 800 million, per Bond Capital data. It remains the dominant AI search platform by reach and the largest source of AI-referred web traffic.

Google AI Overviews reach an estimated 2 billion monthly active users, appearing on roughly 48 percent of all search queries, per BrightEdge data from 2026. This is up from 31 percent in early 2025. Google processes approximately 5 trillion searches per year, roughly 13.7 billion per day, and AI Overviews appear on nearly half of them. The absolute query volume dwarfs every other platform. For brands that already rank in Google’s organic top 10, AI Overviews represent a citation surface with enormous reach that requires only incremental optimization beyond existing SEO investment.

Google Gemini, the standalone chatbot product separate from AI Overviews, has approximately 450 million monthly active users, per industry estimates. Google AI Mode, a more expansive AI search experience that replaces the traditional SERP entirely, had reached 100 million monthly users as of mid-2025 and is growing. Google’s AI platform portfolio is fragmented across three products with different interfaces and behaviors, but they all draw from the same search index and are powered by the same underlying Gemini models.

Claude, from Anthropic, sits at approximately 20 million monthly active users according to industry estimates compiled by Exploding Topics. This is the smallest user base among the major platforms, but the growth trajectory is significant. Claude’s web search feature was launched later than ChatGPT’s, and OtterlyAI only began tracking Claude citations in June 2026. The platform’s user demographics skew toward technical, academic, and enterprise audiences, which means for brands in those markets, Claude’s effective reach is higher than the raw user count suggests.

Perplexity has roughly 22 million monthly active users and processes over 500 million queries per month, per company data from 2026. Its audience is disproportionately composed of researchers, analysts, and professionals conducting deep information work, which means the user intent distribution is weighted toward high-consideration queries.

Microsoft Copilot reaches approximately 30 million monthly users. It is the primary AI search interface for Bing users and the default AI assistant in Microsoft’s enterprise ecosystem. For brands with strong Bing SEO, Copilot visibility is a direct extension of that investment.

Collectively, ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, and Claude attracted over 600 million unique visitors in May 2025 alone, according to Semrush Traffic Analytics. The AI search landscape is not a single platform with a few challengers. It is a multi-polar ecosystem where each engine represents a meaningfully different audience with different citation behavior.

Search backends: the infrastructure that determines what each engine can find

The source pool each engine draws from is the single most under-discussed factor in GEO strategy. Different search backends mean different content is visible to each engine, and content that is not in the index is not citable, regardless of quality.

ChatGPT’s web search relies on two sources: Bing’s search index, via Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, and OpenAI’s own web index, built by crawlers including OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. This means content that ranks in Bing has an indirect advantage for ChatGPT visibility. Content that is indexed by Bing but not prominently ranked still may surface in ChatGPT results because ChatGPT’s citation pattern diverges sharply from traditional search rankings, pulling from organic positions 21 and beyond roughly 90 percent of the time.

Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Google AI Mode share Google’s search index, the largest and most comprehensive web index in existence. This is both an advantage and a constraint. The advantage is that content in Google’s index has the largest potential audience. The constraint is that AI Overview citations are heavily ranking-correlated, with 54.5 percent coming from organic top 10 results. Content that ranks poorly in traditional Google search is unlikely to appear in AI Overviews regardless of how AI-optimized it is.

Claude’s web search uses the Brave Search API, not Google and not Bing. Brave operates its own independent web index. It is significantly smaller than either Google’s or Bing’s indexes, but its ranking algorithm prioritizes content quality and authority signals over popularity and engagement metrics. For brands that have invested heavily in Google SEO but have no presence in Brave’s index, Claude will not find or cite their content during web search sessions. This is a meaningful blind spot that most GEO strategies ignore entirely.

Perplexity operates its own search index, also independent of Google and Bing. It prioritizes real-time freshness and can search, evaluate, and cite from dozens of sources for a single query. Perplexity’s indexing approach is more aggressive than Claude’s Brave integration in terms of source volume but similarly independent from the Google ecosystem that most SEO efforts target.

Microsoft Copilot uses Bing’s index exclusively, with the same ranking signals that govern Bing’s traditional search results. Bing Webmaster Tools launched an AI Performance Report in February 2026, providing the first native analytics for AI citation on any platform. This gives Copilot a measurement advantage that other platforms have not yet matched.

The practical summary: content optimized for Google may not appear in ChatGPT because ChatGPT uses Bing and its own index. Content optimized for Google and Bing may not appear in Claude because Claude uses Brave. Content optimized for Google, Bing, and Brave may still be missed by Perplexity, which uses its own independent index. Multi-engine GEO requires multi-index SEO. Any strategy that optimizes for one index is optimizing for a subset of the AI search landscape.

Citation patterns: each engine trusts different sources

The most consequential difference between AI engines is not how many users they have. It is which sources they trust and cite. The patterns are consistent and platform-specific.

ChatGPT sources 50 percent of its citations from business and service websites, per Semrush’s AI Search Study from July 2025, which analyzed 500-plus high-value digital marketing and SEO topics. News and media accounts for 20.3 percent. Blogs and content sites, e-commerce platforms, community forums, educational institutions, directories, review sites, and social networks each account for less than 10 percent individually.

ChatGPT’s reliance on Wikipedia is centrally important to brand strategy. Ahrefs’ December 2025 study of 75,000 brands found that ChatGPT sources 47.9 percent of its citations from Wikipedia. For brands, getting an accurate Wikipedia entry, and getting content cited on Wikipedia pages relevant to their industry, is the highest-leverage single action for ChatGPT visibility.

ChatGPT also exhibits a pattern that traditional SEO practitioners find counterintuitive. When ChatGPT web search cites a page, it pulls from organic positions 21 and beyond roughly 90 percent of the time. It actively surfaces content buried past page two in Google results. This means Google ranking is not a prerequisite for ChatGPT visibility in the way it is for AI Overview visibility. Content that ranks poorly on Google can still be surfaced by ChatGPT if the content structure and authority signals align with what ChatGPT’s retrieval system evaluates.

Google AI Overviews show a fundamentally different citation pattern. Quora is the number one most cited domain across all AI Overview queries, per Semrush’s July 2025 analysis. Reddit is number two. LinkedIn, YouTube, The New York Times, Travel and Leisure, Good Housekeeping, and NerdWallet all appear in the top 20 most cited domains. AI Overviews heavily favor user-generated content platforms and established editorial publications over brand websites, with the exception of brands that already rank in the organic top 10.

The correlation between organic rankings and AI Overview citations has been strengthening. BrightEdge data shows the overlap rose from 32.3 percent to 54.5 percent from early 2025 to early 2026. This trend suggests that Google is progressively aligning AI Overview citations more closely with organic ranking signals, which would make traditional SEO increasingly predictive of AI Overview visibility.

The relationship between AI Mode and AI Overviews is worth understanding separately. Google AI Mode is a more expansive AI search interface that replaces the traditional SERP entirely. Ahrefs research comparing the two found that AI Overviews and AI Mode reach the same substantive conclusion 86 percent of the time for the same query, but only 13.7 percent of the time do they cite the same specific URLs. The platforms agree on what the answer should be but diverge sharply on which sources support that answer. This means optimization for AI Overviews does not automatically optimize for AI Mode, despite both being Google products.

Claude’s citation patterns are less systematically studied. OtterlyAI launched Claude tracking in June 2026. Early observations suggest Claude favors Wikipedia, academic publications, government sources, and editorial content with clear author credentials and source attribution. Social media content, UGC platforms, and commercial product pages appear less frequently in Claude’s citations relative to other engines. For brands in YMYL industries, legal, finance, health, Claude’s authority preference aligns well with the content standards those industries already maintain for regulatory compliance.

Perplexity’s citation-first design means it provides the most transparent citation behavior of any platform. Every factual claim is linked to a specific source. Users can see the engine’s search process, which sources it evaluated, and how it cross-referenced information. Perplexity can visit over 30 sources for a single complex query and displays its full evaluation chain. For brands trying to understand why they are or are not being cited, Perplexity offers the clearest diagnostic of any AI engine.

The cross-platform domain overlap is the most sobering statistic in GEO research. Only 11 percent of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for the same query. A Semrush brand overlap analysis from February 2026 tested 10 randomly selected SaaS queries and found ChatGPT overlap with Google’s organic top 10 was 2.1 percent, AI Overviews overlap was 8.3 percent, Google AI Mode overlap was 15.5 percent, and Perplexity overlap was 32 percent. The platforms are not seeing the same web. They are seeing different slices of it, through different filters, and surfacing different brands as a result.

Referral traffic: ChatGPT dominates, but the attribution problem masks the real picture

ChatGPT drives 56 percent of all AI-referred web traffic, according to OtterlyAI’s 2026 data. Google’s combined properties, Gemini and AI Overviews, drive approximately 18 percent. Perplexity drives 8 percent. The remaining share is split across Claude, Copilot, and other platforms.

AI-referred traffic as a whole grew 527 percent year over year from January to May 2025, per SparkToro and Previsible. Semrush projects that AI search traffic will surpass traditional organic search traffic by early 2028, and that AI channels will drive equivalent economic value to traditional organic search by the end of 2027. The growth curve is steep and accelerating.

The most important traffic metric is not volume but conversion efficiency. AI search visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic search visitors, per Semrush’s AI Search Traffic Study from July 2025. One agency client was reported to be seeing ChatGPT traffic convert at approximately 30 percent, per a case study referenced in Semrush’s LLM optimization guide. The mechanism is intuitive: a user who arrives from an AI search has already been educated by the AI about their options, their pricing, and their trade-offs. They arrive pre-qualified, with context and purchase intent that a traditional organic visitor typically lacks.

A major attribution gap distorts these numbers downward. Google AI Mode links use the noreferrer attribute, which strips referrer data from the click. These visits appear as direct traffic in analytics. Confirmed by Tom Critchlow, Lily Ray, and Aleyda Solis on social media in 2025. Some users interact with an AI answer, do not click through immediately, and later visit the brand’s site via a branded search. Attribution tools cannot connect that visit to the AI interaction that prompted it. The result is that most brands undercount their AI search traffic, possibly by a factor of two or more, depending on their industry.

The tracking solution is a custom GA4 channel group using session source matching. A regex that captures chatgpt.com, openai.com, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, perplexity.ai, and claude.ai in the source field will surface AI-referred traffic that standard attribution misses. Even with this fix, direct traffic that originated from AI interactions will remain unattributed, so the resulting number should be treated as a floor, not a ceiling.

Content freshness: the universal lever that works across every engine

Content freshness is the closest thing to a universal optimization lever in GEO. Every major AI engine weights recency in its retrieval and citation logic, though the mechanism differs by platform.

SE Ranking’s analysis of 1.3 million citations found that cited pages are 26 percent fresher on average than top-ranking organic results for the same queries. Content published within three months is roughly three times more likely to be cited than content older than six months. Seer Interactive’s separate analysis found that nearly 90 percent of pages crawled by AI bots were published within the last three years.

ChatGPT’s web search mode explicitly prioritizes recency over depth in many cases. A practitioner observation from Metehan Yesilyurt at AEO Vision, published on LinkedIn in 2025, noted that ChatGPT “prioritizes RECENT over PERFECT,” meaning newly published content that is mediocre in quality can outrank excellent evergreen content from 2022 or 2023. This is a departure from traditional SEO, where established, well-linked pages often maintain rankings for years with minimal updates.

Perplexity’s real-time search makes freshness the most heavily weighted signal of any platform. Because Perplexity can search the live web for every query, content published days ago can appear in Perplexity responses immediately, and content that is months old can be displaced by newer alternatives within days. For brands in fast-moving industries, this creates a content velocity requirement: publishing frequency and recency matter more for Perplexity visibility than for any other platform.

Google AI Overviews’ freshness sensitivity is lower than ChatGPT’s or Perplexity’s because AI Overview citations are more tightly correlated with traditional organic rankings, which are less freshness-sensitive. But for YMYL topics, including health, finance, and legal, freshness is weighted more heavily because outdated information on these topics carries higher risk. A medical study from 2019 may still rank on Google organically but will not be cited by AI Overviews if a more recent study exists.

Claude’s freshness behavior is the least documented but appears to follow a pattern similar to the other engines: recent content is weighted above older content, with a preference for content that has been recently updated and carries current authorship dates.

The operational implication is simple: content that has not been updated in over six months is largely invisible to AI search engines. Content refreshed quarterly maintains citation eligibility. Publishing frequency is not just an SEO tactic for AI visibility. It is a prerequisite for being in the retrieval set at all.

Conversion and ROI: the business case for engine-specific investment

The conversion data creates a business case for GEO that applies with varying strength across engines.

AI search visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of organic search visitors, per Semrush. This ratio is an average across platforms. ChatGPT visitors, who tend to arrive from more context-rich, conversation-driven searches, likely convert at the higher end of this range. Perplexity visitors, who arrive from more research-oriented, multi-source searches, may convert at a lower rate but with higher average deal sizes because their searches tend to be higher-consideration.

The Gartner projection that brands’ organic search traffic will halve by 2028 as consumers adopt generative AI search is widely cited in industry discussions. The projection may be aggressive, but the direction is not disputed. The value of traditional organic rankings is declining because the share of searches that result in a click on a traditional result is declining. Brands that maintain organic rankings but have no AI visibility will receive a shrinking share of search-driven traffic even if their rankings remain unchanged.

The first-mover advantage in AI visibility is real and compounding. AI engines train on the content they retrieve and cite. If your brand is cited today, you are more likely to be cited tomorrow because the engine’s training data now includes your content as an authoritative source for that topic. If your competitor is cited instead, they capture both the immediate referral traffic and the compounding training data advantage. This means the cost of delaying GEO investment is not just the traffic you miss today. It is the accumulation of competitor citations that make your brand progressively harder to surface over time.

The zero-click behavior concern, that AI Overviews will answer questions without users clicking through to any source, is partially supported by data but not as dire as early predictions suggested. Pew Research Center data from July 2025 found that users click traditional results only 8 percent of the time when an AI Overview is present, compared to 15 percent without one, and only 1 percent of users click links within the AI Overview itself. But Semrush’s December 2025 AI Overviews study found that the zero-click rate for AI Overview keywords has been steadily declining, not rising, since January 2025. When the same set of keywords went from no AI Overview to AI Overview present, the zero-click rate actually decreased from 33.75 percent to 31.53 percent. AI Overviews do not automatically increase zero-click behavior. In some cases, the prominent source links within the AI Overview may drive more clicks than the traditional SERP would have generated for those same pages.

OtterlyAI’s data points in the same direction: brands cited inside AI Overviews get 35 percent more organic clicks overall than brands not cited. The brand visibility benefit of being cited extends beyond the AI Overview click itself. Users who see a brand cited prominently in an AI answer are more likely to seek out that brand through other channels, including organic search, branded search, and direct navigation.

Engine-specific optimization: what to do for each platform

For ChatGPT:

Content freshness is the primary lever. ChatGPT’s web search explicitly prioritizes recency. Publish original research with named data points, expert quotes, and case study results. The original GEO study from KDD 2024 showed that content with statistics and quotations had 30 to 40 percent higher visibility in AI responses, and this applies across platforms. Ensure OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are not blocked in robots.txt. Maintain Bing SEO fundamentals because ChatGPT’s web search relies partly on Microsoft’s index. Secure Wikipedia presence because 47.9 percent of ChatGPT citations originate from Wikipedia. Invest in Reddit and LinkedIn visibility because ChatGPT’s community-source preference is well documented.

For Google AI Overviews:

Rank in the organic top 10. The 54.5 percent overlap between AI Overview citations and organic rankings means traditional SEO is the foundation, and no amount of GEO-specific content optimization can substitute for poor organic rankings. Build presence on Quora, Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn, the four most cited domains. Create FAQ content with FAQPage schema. Use Google-Extended alongside Googlebot in robots.txt. Recognize that for YMYL topics, the authority bar is significantly higher and AI Overviews trigger less frequently.

For Google Gemini:

Gemini optimization largely overlaps with AI Overview optimization because both draw from the same index and use the same models. The standalone Gemini chatbot is worth tracking separately because its interface and user behavior differ from AI Overviews, but the underlying retrieval mechanism is the same. Ensure content is in Google’s index. Follow Google’s Search technical requirements. Structured data is explicitly recommended by Google for AI search performance in their May 2025 documentation.

For Claude:

Ensure your site is indexed by Brave Search. Brave’s independent index is the gate. If your content is not in it, Claude cannot cite it during web search sessions. Publish content with strong, specific source attribution and clear author credentials. Claude’s authority preference means author bios with verifiable expertise, academic or institutional affiliations, and properly cited sources carry disproportionate weight. Invest in Wikipedia presence and third-party editorial citations, because these are the primary off-site authority signals Claude’s retrieval system evaluates. Allow ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt.

For Perplexity:

Publish content that completely answers narrow, specific questions. Perplexity evaluates sources on whether they fully address the query rather than partially covering multiple angles. A page that partially answers five related questions will be skipped in favor of five pages that each answer one question definitively. Update content aggressively. Perplexity’s real-time search means freshness signals are stronger here than on any other platform. Use numbered lists, tables, and structured formats because Perplexity’s citation-first display makes extractable formatting more important than narrative polish.

For Microsoft Copilot:

Optimize for Bing search. Copilot’s citation behavior is governed by Bing’s ranking and relevance algorithms. Use Bing Webmaster Tools to monitor AI performance, taking advantage of the AI Performance Report launched in February 2026. Ensure Bingbot has full access to your content in robots.txt, separate from Googlebot permissions.

For all engines:

Unblock AI crawlers. Seventy-three percent of sites have technical barriers preventing AI crawler access. Verify that GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and Bingbot are allowed in robots.txt. Serve content via server-side rendering because most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. Publish content with statistics, named sources, and expert quotations because these elements boost AI visibility by 30 to 40 percent regardless of platform. Use a monitoring tool that covers all six engines because optimizing for one platform without tracking the others creates blind spots that competitors will exploit.

Which engine should you prioritize?

The answer depends on your industry, your audience, and your current state of SEO and off-site authority. But a general prioritization framework applies.

If you can only invest in one engine, invest in ChatGPT. It has the largest user base. It drives the most referral traffic. Its citation patterns are the least dependent on existing Google rankings, which means the barrier to entry is lower than for AI Overviews. And its user demographics, 64 percent male, 42 percent under 25, suggest that younger consumers, the people who will have the most lifetime value, are disproportionately on ChatGPT.

If you already rank well on Google organically, invest in AI Overviews. The 54.5 percent overlap between organic rankings and AI Overview citations means your existing SEO investment creates a path to AI Overview visibility with relatively small incremental effort.

If your industry audience is technical, academic, or concentrated in regulated professions, invest in Claude. The smaller user base is offset by higher audience relevance and lower competition for citations, since most brands are not yet optimizing for Claude.

If your content strategy is built around research and analysis, invest in Perplexity. The platform’s citation-first design and research-oriented user base reward the kind of deep, specific, well-sourced content that Perplexity users seek.

If your audience is in enterprise Microsoft environments, invest in Copilot. The Bing integration and enterprise default status make Copilot disproportionately important for B2B brands.

The strategic answer is to track all six and invest proportionally based on where your data shows competitive opportunity and audience presence. The engine you ignore is the one where your competitors are building visibility right now.
